I frequently peruse a forum dedicated to local community theater. Recently a conversation ensued about a proposed upcoming local production that would be considered to have risqué material being produced by a theater company known for steering on the side of caution when staging shows.

I have a small theater company (yes, I called DownHome Decadence a theater company) that specializes in a very specific type of artistic endeavor which is shadow casting. In other words, we take a performance and both re-create what is seen on the screen yet allow our actors to push their own sense of character into the role. Yes, we do not need to sing and our dancing can be a bit off, as sometimes the audience is distracted by the movie; however, we loose the luxury of being able to slow a scene down or regroup if things are going out of control. Our pacing is directed by the preexisting film, including content that the audience may (and usually does) find objectionable.

Our primary show is The Rocky Horror Picture Show, which is shocking enough as it is; however, what you see on screen oftentimes becomes way more graphic when seen live – the impact of theater. It is one thing to see a silhouetted illusion of sexual activity on a movie screen, yet you do it live and the heat rises a bit in the theater. We have now done Repo! The Genetic Opera. Yes, we have reenacted the repossession of human organs live on stage in front of a paying audience, all set to music.

I am sure there are people who think what we do is not art. I am sure there are people who think what we do is extremely edgy. However, we consistently push the physical restrains of venues with the sheer number of people we draw to our shows. All I can say is if you think we have pushed things in the past, wait until you see what we do with I Was A Teenage Werebear!

I think that far too often local producers/directors vastly underestimate their paying audience. I know that many people in the local area simply do not attend theater, as they know they are getting a “watered down” production. However, that is my opinion and you are entitled to yours. So, what say you?

First off, I must humbly thank Tim Sullivan for granting the rights to screen I Was A Teenage Werebear from the Chillerama anthology during the upcoming DownHome Decadence Rocky Horror Picture Show performance on June 9, 2012 at the Ro-Na Theater on South 3rd Street in Ironton OH. Second off, I have to thank the Board of Directors of DownHome Decadence for having the faith and confidence in allowing me to have a moment to be somewhat self-indulgent and able to spread the word of Chillerama and Werebears at our show. Lastly, I have to thank my wonderful cast who have the faith to do something no one has done before!

I Was A Teenage Werebear is my return to the director’s chair for shadow casting, as well as a return for me on the performance stage. I want to share with you a little of the insight I had in converting Werebears from the big screen to the big theater. In taking on any new movie to shadow cast, the first thing you must do is focus on the key scenes of the film to set the level of production you are going to do. When DownHome Decadence shadow casted Repo! The Genetic Opera, we determined just how much special effects we wanted to pull off and took into account what special effects we could actually have given the space limitations and clean up requirements of the space we were performing in.

Click on the I Was A Teenage Werebear poster to be taken to DownHome Decadence's official website

With I Was A Teenage Werebear, the script is so well written that the musical numbers could almost stand alone. The connecting dialogue is nearly secondary, so we determined that we would eliminate live performance of about 90% of the secondary dialogue and focus on the songs. Second, we looked at the cast – there are a lot of extras in Werebears, and the more people you put on stage, the more difficult the casting gets; therefore, the decision was made to strip down the cast (figuratively for most and literally for some) and key in on the main characters of Ricky, Talon, and Peggy Lou. We wanted to drill in on the love triangle that is no so much a love triangle. As always, we wanted to also look into the comedy, add a touch of making the show interesting for the audience, and allow me the self-indulgency of being part of the world debut Werebears shadow cast, so I cast myself as Coach Tuffman.

The three core performers for the debut performance of I Was A Teenage Werebear consists of a DownHome Decadence new face, Jake Huff; a long time fan favorite, Jared Mitchell; and making her DownHome Decadence on stage performing debut is our Stage Manager Ashleigh Bills.

I will try to keep you all up-to-date with the progress of both I Was A Teenage Werebear, as well as The Rocky Horror Picture Show production all throughout the month right here on The Davey Boy Show dot com!

I am not going to make any attempts to hide my frustration with the current guard of the Republican Party. I would like them to know that in their efforts to bastardize the once Grand Old Party with a close-minded and narrow focused agenda and allowing loud mouth braggarts like Rush Limbaugh to continue the wild witch hunt against “RINO” (Republican In Name Only) individuals, you have successfully pushed me away.

I sat down and watched part of the Libertarian Party Convention on C-SPAN this weekend and found a whole new world. Now, I will admit that a lot of them are pretty crazy with some of their thoughts, but the words, “if your party is not talking about gay rights and gun rights in the same sentence, come talk to us.” I like that comment a lot.

I believe that Mitt Romney is nothing short of a Barack Obama light and challenge pundits like Glenn Beck and Ann Coulter to provide solid evidence why this is not the case? I cannot see where Barack Obama has made this world any better today than it was when he was elected, and that my friends is the litmus test for measuring the effectiveness of any incumbent. I feel like the Obama Administration is a sinking ship and the Romney Train offers nothing but a bumpy ride for this passenger, so where do I turn?

Yes, I am eyeballing the Libertarian Party mightily hard. The political choice for Howard Stern, Art Bell, John Stossel, and Penn and Teller is good enough for me!

18 years ago and I was 18 years old, a struggling closeted glam rock club kid hidden inside the shell of an angry Republican. I wrote poetry that made my teachers blush, but too good for them to hide away. I was a rebel with torn jeans against the dress code and the cute ass looks of Zack Morris. We didn’t have 911 in our memories and AIDS was our biggest fear. Fiercely clutching to the innuendo of Tori and the Pet Shop Boys, it all went cold when Kurt gave up his soul….

Just give me a pair of Doc Martins, cut off jean shorts, a flannel, and a Zima with a Jolly Rancher in the bottom and everything will be okay again.

Never have I ever been so thankful to have spent $25 to see a living legend than I am tonight, knowing I was able to see comedy legend Gallagher LIVE and in person and be slammed with the remnants of a watermelon from the mighty blow of the Sledge-O-Matic.

Yes kids, I saw Gallagher with my friend Nathan and his girlfriend several years ago. We got the chance to see him at the now defunct Huntington Funny Bone Comedy Club. Tickets were $25 – first come, first served. We got there as early as they would let us in the venue. We were like the third people through the door and seated right at the edge of the stage.

Never has a man with more whit and wisdom entertained a group of eager and anxious fans than on that wonderful night.

Not only did I bare witness to his act, but also was fortunate enough to be called on stage to be the “might oak tree” in the forest where the bear poops in the woods.

Later on that weekend, as I was standing outside The Downtown Discount Cinema Theater, Gallagher himself came walking down the sidewalk. I said a simple thank you for the show, and he looked at me and said “weren’t you the tree last night?” I told him I was. He asked what I was doing. I said I was getting ready to host The Rocky Horror Picture Show. He said “I remember getting high and watching that shit.”

I asked him what advice he would give to anyone who wanted to entertain a crowd and will never forget his words. He told me to pace myself, never rush through comedy. He said to be honest, that the funniest stuff on the planet was our reality. He also told me to be intelligent. He said if I ever lost an audience by speaking over their heads, they did not deserve to hear what I had to say. His last piece of advice to me was to be strong, own the stage, and always maintain control over the crowd.

Gallagher suffered a heart attack on stage earlier this week, and was placed into a medically induced coma for nearly a week in a Dallas hospital. Leo David Gallagher – your comedy legacy will live on forever in my mind. Your words of advice are indelibly branded in my mind.

Thank you for 32 years of laughs, memories, and ruined clothes from all of the flying produce.

Why be a Republican? I mean, Republicanism is based on the idea of “pulling yourself up by your bootstraps” and of working hard, but what about those who can’t work, such as mentally ill people, brain-damaged people, and disabled people? Or what about those who can only manage to get minimum-wage jobs, and therefore, cannot earn enough money to get by? I mean, it seems to me like Republicanism is hell-bent on ignoring those people. Is that true? If so, then why call yourself a Republican?

First off, the only reason I am a Republican is because I take a Republican ballot in my state’s primary polls. I consider myself a Modern Young Conservative more than a Republican.

Republicanism is what it is. I am not here to defend or attack it. It is just not what I am about right now. I feel that the Republican Party is currently being attacked by an organisation hijacking the core beliefs of the party called the Tea Party Patriots much in the same way the Klu Klux Klan invaded the inner workings of the Democratic Party many years ago.

The Modern Young Conservative Movement is all about removing governmental limitations on what anyone can be or achieve in this world. I am pro 1st amendment, pro gun ownership, pro life, and most importantly pro God. I wish more people would get to know Christ before they get to know the minion called Christians. I wish that more people would embrace diversity, but am realistic enough to know that “it gets better” is not going to happen as long as people are close minded. I would rather someone be honest with me and tell me what they feel than to lie to appear as if they are accepting of who and what I am.

I am what the world fears the most. I am a broad thinking, goal oriented, motivated, good old sonofbitch who is not afraid to speak his mind, who believes God loves me and has a plan for me and is realistic enough to know not everyone is going to accept that. Oh yea…I am also queer and like dick in my ass.

I would rather think that everyone (despite what handicaps they may have) are capable of being the next Einstein. I would hate to limit anyone’s abilities based upon their mental, physical, or emotional limitations.

I cannot speak for the Republican Party…further, anyone who feels they can speak for anyone else needs to get off the cross….if everyone would speak for themselves rather than letting others speak for them, the world would be a far better place.

The cover art for the now eBay banned I Was A Teenage Werebear Soundtrack

I have not blogged in awhile – not for lack of having anything to say, but simply because I barely have time to breathe, much less sit down and type out a blog entry! However, I have to take a moment to stop and make everyone aware of an unfair business practice occurring at eBay at the moment.

As many of you know, I have recently become a fan of the horror/comedy anthology Chillerama. One of the shorts that make up the anthology is called I Was A Teenage Werebear, which is part Grease/part Rebel Without Cause and all fun! It is a mini musical about a teenager who gets bitten and instead of turning into a Werewolf, he turns into a leather bear looking Werebear. The movie and music is all camp and fun and even features former porn star Brent Corrigan turned mainstream movie actor Sean Paul Lockhart – what is not to like?

However, the soundtrack for the I Was A Teenage Werebear was recently released on Buysoundtrax Records and the director of the short, Tim Sullivan, wanted to offer a way to purchase autographed copies of the soundtrack so he went through eBay. Guess what kids….check out what Tim Sullivan posted on Facebook, you will never believe it!!!

“YES it is TRUE ! eBay has banned the sale of the personally autographed TEENAGE WEREBEAR CD and 8×10 on its site, deeming it “sexually and morally offensive”. I KID YOU NOT!

Rather than fight an uphill battle with the fine folks in eBay’s ‘safety & trust” department, I have decided to offer an alternative to those wishing to indulge in the apparently corrupt delights of the Werebear World”

Never fear, autographed copies of the soundtrack are still available by sending an email to newrebel2211@gmail.com and writing “FUCK YES- I WANNA BE SEXUALLY AND MORALLY OFFENDED!” in the body of the email. You will be invoiced via Paypal for your purchase.

Of post script worthiness, it is possible for you to purchase the actual DVD/BluRay of the movie Chillerama on eBay.
